After San Jose we travelled to La Fortuna to see Arenal Volcano, we really were staying very near to it, nearer than I'd expected and it's still active! Although it hasn't properly erupted in a few years there is still steam coming out of the top.
We did an early morning hike to the base of the volcano... as staying near it wasn't dangerous enough. It was a brilliant walk although we didn't see as many animals as we'd hoped we did see a family of spider monkeys, some toucans & some other birds that I don't know the name of. We were also able to walk on the dried lava from previous eruptions then had a swim in a hot water river.
to avoid 7 hours on a bus we caught a boat across Lake Arenal which was beautiful with great view of the volcano, then a very bumpy, mountainous 2 hour bus journey with steep cliffs either side, very scenic but very scary.
We're now in Monteverde which is really beautiful and in the cloud forest and so quiet. Most of our time here has been spent trying to spot a sloth although in the process we have walked a lot & seen loads of other animals.
Yesterday we spent the day walking in an ecological reserve & saw loads of animals like white face monkeys, Coatis & Agoutis which are a bit like rat pigs, a massive tarantula, fireflies which are amazing and finally a SLOTH! The sloth was up a tree though so we couldn't see it's pretty face.
Today we did a tree top walk, like Salcey Forest but better... It was 8 huge suspension bridges above the rainforest with the biggest 170 metres long & 60 metres high. I thought I would have been more frightened but I quite enjoyed it!
