We're now in San Jose, Costa Rica after almost 25 hours of flights from Australia and 4 different time zones, I'm still pretty confused about what time it is! We were lucky enough to get to witness February 23rd twice... as we crossed the date line we arrived in America before we left Australia!
We spent just a day in Los Angeles in Hollywood and saw Hollywood boulevard with all the stars and handprints on the pavement. They were also setting up for the Oscars while we were there so we actually got to walk on the red carpet (even if it was covered in plastic)
When we got to the airport ready to leave America we were told we had to show evidence of our intention to leave Costa Rica before we'd be allowed on the flight. Everything we had read said this was a requirement but not technically enforced, but if we wanted to get on our flight we had to buy a ticket out of Costa Rica, we were starting to think we might have to miss our flight and go somewhere else as the ticket back was going to be really expensive. It turned out to be ridiculously expensive, $650 each! But fully refundable, so we bought the tickets for a flight we have no intention of of catching and then we just got a refund when we arrived here!
We aren't planning on staying in Costa Rica forever but we're getting a bus out and will probably fly back from Guatemala but we'll see how far north we get in the next few months.
San Jose is surprisingly fine, the central area is pretty run down but nowhere near as dangerous as people have it sound. There were lots of little parks with live music, skipping competitions and people playing chess, it was all very peaceful.
The directions we had to our hostel were "350 metres west of spoon" Spoon is a restaurant in the area. It seems unbelievable but no-one uses road names here, they just use local landmarks and addresses are x metres north, south, east or west from there! Amazingly the taxi driver knew just where we meant.
